If you need to repay pension or other compensation

If you have received too much pension or other taxable compensation from us, you may become liable for repayment.

Here you can find information about what applies to repayment and what instalment plans we have, how to appeal a decision and what happens if you do not pay the money back.

If you have received too much pension or other compensation

If you discover that you have received too much pension or other compensation, you must report it to the Swedish Pensions Agency.

If you have received too much money from us, you may be liable for repayment of the incorrect amount paid out. This applies regardless of whether it is we or you who caused the incorrect payment. When we or you discover that your pension or other compensation has been paid incorrectly, we will investigate whether you will be liable to reimburse the money.

Changed rules for repayment

On January 1, 2019, the rules on reports to the Swedish Tax Agency were changed. The Swedish Pensions Agency must report how much pension or other compensation has been paid out and how tax has been deducted for each person each month. The tax deduction is part of the payment and when a tax deduction has been paid to the Swedish Tax Agency, the Swedish Pensions Agency can no longer regulate the tax deduction.

The new rules mean that the person who becomes liable for repayment must pay back the full incorrect payment, in other words the incorrect payment plus the tax that was paid to the Swedish Tax Agency.

The purpose of the changed tax rules is, amongst other things, that you should always be able to see what the Swedish Pensions Agency has reported to the Swedish Tax Agency regarding paid pension or compensation and tax deductions. You can see this by logging in to My pages on the Swedish Tax Agency's website.

You will get your tax money back if there is a surplus in your tax account when the Swedish Tax Agency has decided on your final tax for this year. This will be done the following year. If you are not able to wait until the following year and have further questions about your tax deduction, you can contact the Swedish Tax Agency. Rules for tax refund on skatteverket.se

If we believe that you need to repay money, you will be given the opportunity to submit comments before we make a decision.

If we then still decide on a repayment, it will say in the decision what the last day is to pay the money back and to which account the money should be paid. If you have not paid by the due date, you will have to pay penalty interest.

Once a decision on repayment has been made, the matter is handed over to the Swedish Social Insurance Agency, which handles repayments for the Swedish Pensions Agency. If you are not able to pay the full amount at once, you can agree with the Swedish Social Insurance Agency on an instalment plan. As long as the instalment plan is in force, you will pay less interest than the penalty interest that you would otherwise need to pay.

You can apply for an instalment plan on My Pages on the Swedish Social Insurance Agency's website. If you apply for an instalment plan before the due date, you do not have to pay the set-up fee for the instalment plan.

You cannot apply for an instalment plan until you have received your decision stating how much you need to pay back and when the due date is. If you are not able to use My Pages, you can call the Swedish Social Insurance Agency's customer center at +46 (0)771-524 524 or apply for a form at the Swedish Social Insurance Agency.

  1. If you do not pay back the money by the due date or contact us, the Swedish Social Insurance Agency will send out a reminder. Penalty interest will be added after the due date.
  2. If you do not pay after you have received a reminder, a debt collection demand will be sent to you and a fee will be added.

After that, the Swedish Social Insurance Agency may decide to deduct the money from the pension or compensation that you receive from the Swedish Pensions Agency or apply to the Swedish Enforcement Authority for an attachment.

If you are not satisfied with our decision on repayment, you may request that the Swedish Pensions Agency reconsiders its decision. Your request for a reconsideration must be submitted to the Swedish Pensions Agency within two months from when you received the decision. More on how to request a reconsideration
