Sanction fees and benefit suspension – what you need to know

On 1 July 2026, two new measures will be introduced as part of work to strengthen protection within the welfare system: benefit suspension and sanction fees. The aim is to prevent incorrect payments and benefit fraud. Read on to learn more about sanction fees and benefit suspension.

What is a sanction fee?

A sanction fee is a fee you may need to pay if you have caused an incorrect payment and you have received a repayment decision. This applies if you have received a payment or an amount higher than you were entitled to and you have received a repayment decision.

How sanction fees are calculated

The sanction fee amounts to 25 per cent of the sum to be repaid. It will not be less than four per cent of the price base amount for the year in question. In 2026, an imposed sanction fee will amount to at least SEK 2,368.

Sanction fees may be reduced in certain cases

In certain situations, the sanction fee may be reduced or waived entirely. Such situations may include if you had difficulty providing information to us due to cognitive difficulties, or if the sanction fee is likely to affect another person, such as a child.

What is benefit suspension?

We may decide on benefit suspension if, either deliberately or through gross negligence, you have:

  • provided incorrect information.
  • failed to provide required information.
  • failed to make required notification of a change.
