If you change your marital status and live outside of Sweden

If you live outside of Sweden and receive a Swedish pension, you must notify us if your marital status changes. This is because the change may affect how much pension you are entitled to.

It is your responsibility to ensure that your information is up to date, as we do not receive the information automatically if you are not registered in the Swedish population register.

What you need to notify us of

You need to notify us as soon as possible if you

  • get married
  • get divorced
  • become a widow or widower.

If you are a registered partner

If you are a registered partner, you are considered married in most EU countries. This means that in most cases, you need to inform us if the status of your registered partnership changes.

However, there are EU countries in which a registered partnership is not equivalent to marriage. Check what rules apply in the country where you live. If your registered partnership is legally equivalent to cohabitation, you do not have to notify us of any changes to your marital status.

If you are cohabiting partners

You do not need to notify us of any changes to your cohabitation.

The are a few exceptions. These are if you

  • separate from or become a cohabiting partner with someone you were previously married to
  • separate from or become a cohabiting partner with someone you have or have had a child with.

To notify us, you need to send a letter to:

Pensionsmyndigheten, 839 77 Östersund, SWEDEN.

If you do not have an electronic ID

If you do not have an electronic ID, you can send us your information in a letter. Your letter must include the following information:

  • Your current marital status.
  • The name and personal identity number (or birth registration number) of your partner.
  • The date on which your marital status took effect.
  • Documents that may be needed to certify your marital status, such as a marriage certificate, a death certificate or a certificate of divorce.
  • Your email address and phone number. This is voluntary information, but may be useful if we need to supplement the information for your notification.

Postal address

Send your letter with information about your marital status to:

Pensionsmyndigheten, 839 77 Östersund, SWEDEN

Why you need to notify us of changes

If you do not notify us when your marital status changes, the calculation of how much you should receive in pension payments may be incorrect. If the pension payments you receive are too high, you may become liable for repayment.
