The housing supplement is tax-free financial support that those with a low pension may be entitled to. Learn how it works here.

What is the housing supplement?

The housing supplement is tax-free supplement for those who have a low pension. You can receive up to SEK 7 290 per month, depending on your finances, housing costs, assets and family circumstances.

When you apply for a housing supplement, we also automatically assess whether you may be entitled to income support for the elderly.Read more about income support for the elderly

Who is entitled to a housing supplement?

You can apply for a housing supplement if you:

  • live in Sweden
  • draw your entire national public pension (income pension and premium pension)
  • are 66 years of age or older (other ages may apply if you were born in 1960 or later)

In some cases, those who draw a widow’s pension or a foreign pension may also be entitled to a housing supplement.

How much can you receive in housing supplement?

You can receive up to SEK 7 290 per month. How much you receive depends on:

  • your housing costs
  • whether you live alone or together with someone
  • your total income and assets, together with those of any partner

Make a preliminary calculation before you apply

You can make a simple calculation on our website before you apply. You don’t need to log in and you can also help someone else make a calculation, or ask someone to help you.

Prepare by gathering information about your housing costs, income and assets. Examples of assets are savings, real estate and funds.

Report changes as soon as possible

A decision on the housing supplement is usually valid until further notice, but if your financial situation changes, the housing supplement has to be recalculated. You must therefore report changes that affect your housing supplement.

It is important to report changes as soon as possible so as not to miss out on the housing supplement. You may also be liable for repayment if you don’t report the correct information.

Examples of changes that often affect the housing supplement

If your housing situation changes

You need to let us know if your housing situation changes, for example if your rent changes, you move or become a cohabitee.

If your income and assets increase or decrease

Notify us if your total annual income increases by at least SEK 1 000 or if your income decreases. Also report any change to your assets.

If you plan to move abroad

If you move abroad, you will no longer be entitled to a housing supplement. Notify us if you plan to stay abroad for more than six months (three months for income support for the elderly)

Important to keep in mind

What’s the difference between the housing supplement and the housing allowance?

  • If you draw your entire national public pension, have turned 66 and live in Sweden, you can apply to the Swedish Pensions Agency for a housing supplement. This also applies to those whose spouse/cohabiting partner draws a pension and has turned 66.
  • If you receive sickness or activity compensation, you can apply to the Swedish Social Insurance Agency for the housing supplement.
  • Families with children and those under the age of 29 can apply for housing allowance, which is handled by the Swedish Social Insurance Agency.
