Occupational pension from your employer

Most people who have worked in Sweden also receive an occupational pension from their employer. Not all employers offer occupational pension, so it is important to find out what applies to you.

If you have had several different employers, you may have an occupational pension from different occupational pension companies.

Find out if you have an occupational pension

There are four large occupational pension agreements in Sweden. Whether you belong to one of them depends on where you work and whether your employer has collective agreements. The four occupational pension agreements apply to employees of the municipality and region, employed by the state, civil servant or private employee.Your employer may also have a different solution for your occupational pension.

Find out if you have an agreement at your workplace where the employer contributes to your occupational pension.

If you do not have an occupational pension

If you are self-employed or do not have an occupational pension, you can compensate for the loss of your occupational pension through your own savings. This is how much it is recommended that you as a self-employed person save (in Swedish)

Occupational pension may also include health insurance and survivor's protection

Occupational pension is not just a pension that you receive after you stop working. It also consists of a health insurance where you can receive compensation in addition to the compensation you receive from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan) if you should become unwell. It also consists of survivor's protection for your loved ones if you should pass away.

When is the occupational pension paid?

Your occupational pension company usually contacts you a few months before you can start withdrawing your pension and asks when you wish to start withdrawing your occupational pension. If you want to start withdrawing it earlier or later, you must contact the occupational pension company.

You may choose to take out your occupational pension for, for example, a period of 5, 10, 15 or 20 years or for the rest of your life. Many people have a life-long withdrawal, unless you make an active choice yourself, which means payments for the rest of your life.
