Did you receive too much in pension or housing supplement?

Did you receive too much in pension, housing supplement or other benefit? Then you are liable for repayment. Information is available here about what you have to do, what rules apply and how to seek help.

Have you received too much money?

It can happen that you receive too much in pension or benefit from us. If so, you need to notify us as soon as possible. Whenever we or you learn that you received too much in pension or other benefit, we investigate what happened.

Here’s what to do

  1. Check your payment statement – is it correct?
  2. Notify us if something is wrong
  3. Read our investigation – you can provide comments before a decision is made

How to repay

If we decide that you received too much, you will have to repay the full amount – including any tax. You will receive a decision that specifies the amount and due date.

You can choose to:

  • pay the full amount directly (within 30 days)
  • apply to divide the payment

Divide the payment – apply for a repayment plan

Paragraf: You can apply for a repayment plan via the Swedish Social Insurance Agency:

  • Applies for amounts over SEK 1 000
  • Repayment period of up to 12 months
  • Interest is charged – but at a lower rate than for late payment

There are some exceptions due to transitional provisions.

The application is made via My Pages or via the Swedish Social Insurance Agency’s customer centre if you can’t use My Pages.

It is important to contact the Swedish Social Insurance Agency promptly if you are unable to pay.

This is what happens if you don’t pay on time

  • You receive a reminder from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency
  • If you don’t pay on time, you will have to pay penalty interest. Penalty interest is set at 10 per cent (Section 6, Interest Act (1975:635)).
  • The matter may be referred to the Swedish Enforcement Authority.

The Swedish Social Insurance Agency is required by law to hand the matter over to the Swedish Enforcement Authority. Once the matter is taken over by the Swedish Enforcement Authority, additional fees will be charged.

If you want to request a review

If you disagree with the decision, you can:

  • request a review within 2 months
  • submit a written explanation as to why you think the decision is wrong
  • be reimbursed for payments you’ve already made, if the decision is changed

Important to know about tax in connection with repayment

Some pensions and benefits from us are taxable, such as guarantee pensions. When you receive a benefit of this kind, we have deducted the tax and paid it to the Swedish Tax Agency. As we don’t receive a refund for the tax from them, you need to repay us for both the benefit paid and the tax.

Do I have to repay if it wasn’t my fault?

Yes, in certain cases. We make an assessment in each individual case.

Can I get more time to pay?

The maximum period is usually 12 months. You can contact the Swedish Social Insurance Agency and apply for a repayment plan.
